Craftsmanship

The Craft

Four stages, each one finished before the next begins.

Hand-drawn jewellery sketch and wax model
01

Design

A drawing, then a wax. Proportion, drape and how the piece will sit against the body are settled long before any gold is cut.

Proportion is settled first: how wide the piece sits, where the weight falls, how it behaves when the wearer moves.

A wax or a silver trial is made before any gold is committed. It is cheaper to be wrong in wax.

Craft

Gold is alloyed, drawn and formed by hand. The structure is built first — the part no one sees, and the part that decides whether a piece lasts.

Gold is alloyed to 22K or 18K depending on the piece, then drawn, rolled or cast to the required form.

The structure is built before any decoration — the framework is what decides whether a piece survives thirty years of wear.

Setting stones under magnification
03

Detail

Stones are set one at a time, each seat cut to the individual stone. Granulation, milgrain and engraving are worked under magnification.

Each stone seat is cut to its individual stone rather than to a standard size, which is why settings sit flush.

Granulation, milgrain and engraving are worked under magnification, by hand.

Finish

Polished through successive grades, then checked against the light. Weight, purity and hallmark are recorded before the piece is boxed.

Polished through successive grades, from coarse to rouge, then checked against daylight rather than showroom light.

Weight and purity are recorded, the hallmark applied, and the piece boxed.

The same process,
for your piece.

Bring a drawing, a photograph, or an old piece you would like remade. It begins the same way — with a conversation about proportion.
